High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” due to the fact that many people do not experience symptoms. Often a person is unaware of elevated blood pressure until a medical professional identifies it during an exam.

High blood pressure occurs when the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries is greater than normal. The term "hypertension" describes blood pressure readings that are consistently higher than 130/80. When left untreated, this can then lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and cause damage to the major organs.
