Tips For Managing Blood Glucose Levels

Recently Diagnosed with Diabetes? Blood glucose management requires awareness and consistent monitoring. Follow these tips for successful Diabetes management.

1st - Get in touch with a Registered Dietitian for individual recommendations. Diabetes management is not one size fits all, and a Registered Dietitian can help you to understand the recommendations and how to apply them to your specific lifestyle.

2nd - Maintaining a healthy weight may help to restore insulin sensitivity and support blood glucose management. It can also help to reduce the risk of other serious complications associated with Diabetes including heart problems, kidney disease and nerve damage.

3rd - Following a healthful diet rich in high fiber fruits and vegetables whole grains, lean proteins, low fat dairy products, and healthy fats can help to prevent sudden glucose level highs and lows.

4th - Check blood sugar levels regularly. Keeping a log of glucose levels can help to identify any patterns and where to make changes if necessary. If abnormal numbers become consistent, it may be helpful to change a meal/snack time throughout the day in order to help balance your levels.

5th - Make exercise part of your daily routine! Exercise allows your muscles to uptake more glucose, and therefore reduces the glucose level in your blood. Be sure to check your levels before, during, and after exercising to avoid complications.

6th - Take all medications as prescribed. It is important to always know what kind of insulin you are taking and how much to take. Every individual is different, and has their own needs.

7th - Choose water. Avoid sugar sweetened beverages as they are often the culprit for dangerous blood sugar spikes. Sugar sweetened beverages are rapidly digested due a lack of fiber or protein, and therefore can cause a blood sugar spike very quickly. It is always best to choose water for hydration.
